Microdermabrasion is a non-chemical, non-invasive procedure that uses a spray of microcrystals to remove the outermost layer of dry, dead skin cells and reveal younger, healthier-looking skin.
Commonly known as ‘Skin Polishing’, Microdermabrasion was first introduced as part of cosmetic weaponry in the late 80s. Three decades and multiple revisions later, Microdermabrasion has come to be one of the so called ‘lunch time’ procedures, meaning little or no down time.
Fresh and new Face
Microdermabrasion facial is a deeply effective treatment for renewing a fresh, young-looking glow to your skin.
Microdermabrasion can best be described as plastic surgery without the plastic… or the surgery! It’s one of the simplest and least disruptive skin treatments and is ideal even for people with sensitive skin.
The microdermabrasion technique works with microcrystals, which are hard enough to disrupt unwanted tired skin cells that cause dull looking skin. But small enough not to do any damage or even cause discomfort or pain. The technique involves propelling the microcrystals across the skin’s surface, removing only the top layer of skin cells. This technology reveals new, living cells leaving a healthy glow. The epidermal layers of the skin are rejuvenated leading to collagen production and plumper skin.
Microdermabrasion is a progressive procedure. After the first session your skin will feel softer and you may see a very subtle improvement. Generally a course of sessions is required to gain visible improvement. Your skin however will improve with additional treatments as increased circulation is noted within the dermis and newer, healthier skin cells are produced.
Not only does undergoing a microdermabrasion facial mean not having any artificial or even natural substances injected, but it also works in harmony with your body. Once the treatment has removed dead and tired cells, your body will work to replace them with fresh, healthier looking skin.
Having a microdermabrasion facial does not cause any pain or even discomfort.
Not only can you return to your normal routine immediately after treatment, but you can even reapply your make-up right away. The only real side effect is possible temporary redness of the skin, which soon fades. Other existing medical conditions should be highlighted during your consultation and advice will be given on an individual basis.
Although microdermabrasion is fundamentally safe, you should still make sure to get treated at a reputable clinic with staff that can provide their credentials and experience.
Microdermabrasion is often considered a fast solution to improve complexion and appearance almost immediately. This procedure can be used to
- Bring about a ‘glow’ to the skin
- Improve an uneven complexion
- Reduce greasiness of the face
- Reduce pigmentation of the face
- Reduce pore size
- Reduce/ correct scars due to acne
- Improve stretch marks
- Enhance penetration of cosmeceuticals into the skin
- Rejuvenate the skin
- Correct photoageing

The procedure involves a superficial abrasion of the epidermis, using fine microsized crystals , which removes superfical dead skin cells, dirt and grease. With repeat passes, a few deeper layers of the epidermis are exfoliated. Since hardly any heat is generated during this procedure, complications are few. A mild erythema is often seen at the end of the procedure, and resolves over a few hours. There is hardly any downtime and the patient can get back to his/ her routine almost immediately after the procedure.
Contraindications for this procedure include the presence of infection/ inflammation at the site of microdermabrasion and/or keloids/ keloidal tendency.
What actually happens during a session of microdermabrasion?
The patient is given a skull cap to wear, and then made to lie down on the procedure couch. The face is cleansed with an alcohol swab to remove dirt, grease and /or makeup. The eyes are covered with eye pads or pieces of gauze. After making the appropriate setting adjustments, passes are made over the face and neck in a systematic fashion, with repeat passes where indicated. The end point is appearance of redness over the treated area, the depth corresponding to the treatment plan made for the patient. Post procedure, the area is cleansed thoroughly, and an ice pack applied for 5 to 10 minutes. A sun screen is then applied if necessary for the time of day. The patient is given instructions to follow till the repeat visit, which is usually planned 4 -5 days later.

Microdermabrasion better than chemical peeling?
While the choice of either modality depends on the indication, microdermabrasion does have lesser downtime, and causes less discomfort. Further, post inflammatory pigmentation is also lesser with this form of rejuvenation. However, a course of chemical peels offer results more quickly than does a course of MDA.
