MINI TUMMY TUCK
The Mini Tummy Tuck treats the minor pouching out of the lower belly caused by stretching of the lower abdominal muscles. It is primarily a muscle tightening procedure. Combined with liposuction of the love handles it can truly reshape the midsection. One word of caution:
Invariably, Can we do a Mini-Tummy Tuck?
The surgeons always take out the deep layer of fat in the lower abdomen, because if they don’t, fat will redistribute in that pocket . You cut out enough skin to take out the slack created by tightening the muscle and defatting the skin, and the scar just goes from one side of the pubic mound to the other. It is a very well disguised scar, and very thin because not much tension is used to close the scar. It’s a great procedure provided you are committed to it’s limitations.
The below are the conditions and limitations for the Mini Tummy Tuck:
- The procedure is not a good skin tightening procedure.
- It can only tighten a limited area directly above the pubic mound. If you try to tighten more, you end up extending the scar sideways, and you get a longer scar that is no longer well hidden and still not the amount of tightening that will make you happy.
- It really doesn’t take care of stretch marks.
- It does not take care of any muscle wall separation above the belly button.
Mini Tummy Tuck (Mini Abdominoplasty)
Mini Tummy Tuck may be the best option when the laxity of the abdominal skin and muscle is isolated to the area below the belly-button (umbilicus). A Mini Abdominoplasty is a combination of a smaller, modified Abdominoplasty and Liposuction.
In our Go Cosmetic Clinics at London, often we will discuss with our patients the difference between Liposuction and Tummy Tucks. When considering an individual patient, usually one or the other is clearly the better choice; however, there is a subset of patients who will benefit from the combination of Liposuction and Tummy Tucking that the Mini Tummy Tuck, aka Mini Abdominoplasty, can provide.
The Tummy Tuck portion of the Mini Tummy Tuck procedure removes excess, loose skin from the lower abdomen, and tightens the underlying muscle, flattening and tightening the bulge in the lower belly. A Mini Tummy Tuck does not adjust the belly-button, so the skin above the umbilicus (belly-button) must look good before a Mini Tummy Tuck in order to look good after. Fat above the umbilicus can be treated with Liposuction.
The Liposuction portion of the Mini Tummy Tuck procedure contours the abdominal wall, and removes excess, disproportionate fat on the upper abdomen and the sides to further enhance the final result.
The incision for a Mini Abdominoplasty is usually shorter than the incision for a “full” Tummy Tuck. This is because mini tummy tucks are usually performed when there is less redundant skin on the lower abdominal wall. Less skin to remove means a shorter scar is required. The low abdominal incision is necessary to tighten the skin and muscles of the lower abdomen.
Tightening the abdominal muscles makes them sore; however, the Mini Tummy Tuck only tightens the lower abdominal muscles. This makes the recovery from the Mini Tummy Tuck significantly easier than the recovery after a full Abdominoplasty. Since you will feel better the sooner you get moving, the speedier, Mini Abdominoplasty makes your recovery quicker.
Walking is encouraged beginning right after your Mini Tummy Tuck. Most patients feel better when they are up and moving. The movement helps work out the soreness, maintain strength and speed recovery. Moreover, early ambulation decreases the risk of complications. The action standing-up itself helps to fully expand your lungs, and walking helps with digestion too.
Hydration is also important after a Mini Abdominoplasty. Proper hydration makes us feel better, speeds healing, and also prevents postoperative complications. Surgery increases the need for fluids, so it is important to drink plenty of liquids during your recovery.
Heavy lifting, more than 20 pounds, is avoided for six weeks.
This allows the tightened muscle fascia to fully heal, and keeps everything tight. To help get you moving right after surgery, Our surgeons may recommend a post-operative pain relieving pump. The pumps infuse local anesthesia into the operative site. By delivering the pain medicine directly to the area that needs it, more effective pain relief is provided with fewer side effects. Since this type of anesthesia uses non-narcotic medications, there is no chance of dependency. Moreover, less narcotic medication is usually required when a pain pump is used. Unfortunately, from time to time, shortages of local anesthesia medications, limit their availability for elective use.
Before the doctor starts the tummy tuck procedure he will carefully mark the area to be treated. The places where the incisions will be made will also be carefully marked.
Mini tummy tuck surgery lasts between 1,5 to 2 hours, depending on the nature of the procedure: skin tightening, fat removal, abdominal muscle correction.
After the treatment the incisions are bandaged. There may be drains (thin tubes) leading from the bandages to drain off any fluid from the wound. These drains usually need to stay in place for two days. You are dressed in the special elastic / compression bandage which you were previously measured for. Then you are taken to the recovery room with heart monitor surveillance. You can usually return to your room an hour later.
Aftercare and Recovery:
After the procedure you are given special aftercare instructions. It is very important that someone comes to meet you because you are not permitted to drive yourself after having a stomach correction.
You will be individually advised to wear the elastic bandage or compression garments for between 2-4 weeks. The compression bandages provide support: which will feel comfortable. The girdle ensures that the skin around the stomach becomes nice and tight. Therefore it is best to wear the girdle day and night: 23/24. The girdle dries quickly so you can wash and dry it in an hour.
- The scars must be kept dry until the stitches are removed.
- The external stitches are removed about a week after the procedure.
- You may then take a luke-warm shower but not a bath.
- The subcutaneous stitches are self-dissolving.
- After the procedure you will be given a 3-day course of antibiotics.
- Allow yourself a minimum of 2 weeks to rest after the procedure.
- A week after the procedure you can resume light daily activities.
- After 6 weeks you can resume your sporting activities and lifting.
It is important that the scar is not put under any pressure for a few weeks after stomach correction surgery. The first 3 months after treatment the scar will be red and lumpy; after this the redness will start to fade. After 12 to 18 months the scars are fully healed, until this time it is important to protect your scar from the sun.
Results of a Mini Tummy tuck
Following a tummy tuck the stomach will be swollen and bruised. The swelling and bruising will last a few weeks. After 6 weeks you will see the results of the procedure. The final result will be visible about a year after your operation, when the scars and subcutaneous tissue are completely healed.
